HOME SWEET HOME: O'Reilly finds a new place to hang her boots

For the first three years of her Women’s Professional Soccer career, Heather O’Reilly played her home games one town over from the town she grew up in.

Now looking forward to her fourth season in the league, the U.S. National Team veteran will be playing even closer to home.

Newly married, O’Reilly and her husband, who is pursuing a Masters degree at Harvard, have been living in Cambridge, Mass., which was the precipitating factor in her signing with the Boston Breakers, who play their home games at Harvard Stadium.

“They’ve been an established club, for both leagues. They always draw great crowds,” O’Reilly said of the Breakers, who began their existence in the Women’s United Soccer Association. “They’ve been an impressive organization. My husband Dave is currently going to Harvard business school, so we recently moved up to Cambridge. So I think the combination of both those things sort of made sense for me to show interest in Boston and they reciprocated, and it was a perfect fit for me being a free agent this year to head up there.”

The 27-year-old has been the driving midfield force for Sky Blue FC the last three years, but is looking forward to getting into a Breakers squad that has made the playoffs the last two seasons.

“I think that they have a lot of talent on that team,” she said. “Only having five teams in this league, there are going to be very talented rosters everywhere, so every game is going to be a challenge for us, as it is for every other team.”
